DOT HANDS-ON URINE SPECIMEN COLLECTION TRAINING
This is an in-person, hands-on DOT urine specimen collection training designed for individuals who want to learn how to properly perform DOT-regulated urine drug screen collections in accordance with 49 CFR Part 40 collection procedures.
This is not a class where you simply sit and watch. Students will receive instruction, demonstrations, hands-on practice, and mock collection experience to develop the skills needed to properly perform DOT urine specimen collections.

WHAT YOUR TRAINING INCLUDES
DOT Collection Procedures

• Understanding the role and responsibilities of a DOT urine specimen collector

• Overview of DOT-regulated drug testing and 49 CFR Part 40

• Understanding the DOT collection process from start to finish

• Proper donor identification and collection-site procedures

• Preparing and securing the collection area

• Explaining the collection process to the donor

• Maintaining donor privacy while following DOT requirements

• Proper specimen handling and security

• Understanding collector responsibilities throughout the collection

Custody & Control Form (CCF) Training

• Step-by-step instruction on completing the Federal Custody and Control Form

• Understanding each section of the CCF

• Collector and donor signatures/certifications

• Proper documentation of the collection

• Common CCF mistakes and how to prevent them

• Understanding documentation errors that can create problems with a DOT collection

Specimen Collection & Processing

• Proper urine specimen collection procedures

• Specimen temperature requirements and temperature documentation

• Specimen volume requirements

• Preparing, sealing, labeling, and documenting specimens

• Maintaining chain of custody

• Preparing specimens for shipment to the laboratory

• Understanding collector responsibilities after the specimen has been collected
   

Problem Collections & DOT Scenarios
Training also covers situations that may occur during an actual DOT collection, including:

• Shy bladder procedures

• Insufficient specimen volume

• Specimens outside the acceptable temperature range

• Suspected tampering or adulteration

• Refusal-to-test situations

• Direct observation procedures and when they may be required

• Collector errors and corrective procedures

• Fatal vs. correctable flaws

HANDS-ON MOCK COLLECTIONS
Students will complete 5 consecutive error-free mock collections as part of the qualification process.
You will practice the collection process from beginning to end, including donor interaction, paperwork, specimen handling, labeling/sealing, chain-of-custody procedures, and common collection scenarios.
Mock collections are evaluated for accuracy. Students must successfully demonstrate proficiency in the required procedures.
Training demonstrations do NOT use real urine. Apple juice may be used for simulated specimen demonstrations.

BUSINESS & INDUSTRY GUIDANCE
In addition to the technical collection training, students receive guidance on entering the drug-testing industry, including:

• Understanding how drug-testing collection services operate

• Collection-site vs. mobile collection opportunities

• Working with employers and businesses that need testing services

• General guidance on establishing laboratory/industry relationships

• Basic marketing and client-acquisition guidance

• Understanding opportunities to provide DOT collection services

Please note: Training does not guarantee employment, contracts, clients, laboratory approval, or business income. Students are responsible for establishing and operating their own businesses and securing their own clients and industry relationships.

CERTIFICATE / QUALIFICATION DOCUMENTATION
Students who successfully complete the required training components and demonstrate proficiency through the required mock collections will receive documentation of training completion.
Important: This training prepares students to meet applicable DOT collector qualification requirements; the U.S. Department of Transportation does not issue a general government “DOT collector license.” Students are responsible for maintaining any required qualification and refresher documentation in accordance with applicable DOT regulations.

No previous drug-testing experience is required unless otherwise stated for a specific class.

Students traveling from out of town should plan travel based on the listed training city and wait for the official venue email before making transportation arrangements that depend on the exact training address.
